We all hear that word: "audition".
Suddenly, we are nervous and apprehensive. We fear being rejected, making mistakes, or the simple unknown of what might happen. It's ok to acknowledge those feelings, but let's really accept this process for what it is: self-discovery!
“Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.”
~Mark Twain
You are ALREADY part of our band family! We use this audition process to place you in a concert ensemble where you will:
Be challenged but not frustrated or overwhelmed.
Learn to lead.
Learn to follow.
Balance out the ensemble.
Contribute your growing skills to your ensemble team.
“To try is to risk failure. But risk must be taken because the greatest hazard of life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing does nothing, has nothing, is nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn, feel, change, grow, live, and love.”
~Leo Buscaglia
We think of so many things when we place you in an ensemble:
How well you play the audition material
Other performance opportunities you have taken in the past (Region Band, Area, State, Solo & Ensemble, Instrumental Choirs, etc)
Leadership qualities in day-to-day interactions
Practice habits
Academics--eligibility and effort
“Replace fear of the unknown with curiosity.”
~Unknown
As you start practicing the audition music, lean into the parts that challenge you. Grow through the struggle of learning the notes, playing the rhythms, and acquiring the necessary skills to do it RIGHT. Then go back and do it again and again.
“Courage does not always roar, sometimes it’s the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, I will try again tomorrow.”
~Mary Anne Radmacher
